The posture problem - I hate slouching + I need lower back pain countermeasures
There’s a lot behind the creation of Peaky 8-bit (P8), but today I want to focus on one specific topic: “posture.”
Peaky 8-bit(P8)
The Posture Problem: I Hate Slouching + I Need Lower Back Pain Countermeasures
I’ve had back problems for as long as I can remember
My spine seems slightly misaligned from birth. My ribs are slightly uneven in height, left to right. Growing up, my parents pointed out my slouching constantly. It seems I was born with a body that strains easily when held in one position for too long.
Through my twenties, it was mostly quiet.
Then came my late thirties — and COVID. Working from home, sitting for long hours. Around the same time, I got into Blender, which meant even more sitting, even more hunching. A dull ache settled into my lower back and never quite left.
By the winter of 2024, I’d experienced ぎっくり腰 (gikkuri-goshi — acute lower back pain) three times. Neck, shoulders, lower back — all chronic now.
The office desks and chairs are just ‘one-size-fits-all’
I’m 155 cm tall.
The standard office desk, the standard office chair — they were never designed for me. I’ve spent years trying to find the right setup. A stool. A dining chair. An exercise ball. Nothing quite worked.
Someone who’s 180 cm and someone who’s 155 cm, working at the same desk, on the same chair — even if the chair height is “adjustable” — I’ve always thought that was fundamentally wrong.
And then there’s the keyboard.
A standard QWERTY keyboard forces both hands into a single fixed position in front of your body. Inevitably, the shoulders roll inward and the back rounds.
I like QWERTY — I want to make that clear. But I’ve also thought, for a long time, that the posture it creates looks a bit like… being handcuffed.

Split keyboards were a step forward — but still chained to the desk
I’d been vaguely aware of split keyboards for a few years, and they always caught my eye. Left and right halves separated — the “handcuffs” come off, shoulders can open up.
But there were barriers. Around ¥30,000 per set, many require you to solder them yourself, and most importantly — they still live on a desk. Even if you mount them on armrests, you’re still sitting in a fixed position.
”Laptop”
I’ve always used laptop computers. And something about that word has stayed with me. “Laptop.” Lap top. On your lap. On your thighs.
If you haven’t tried this, give it a go: place a laptop on a desk and rest your hands on the keyboard. Then place it on your lap and do the same. Which feels more relaxed? (It probably depends on your height and shoulder position, but…)
For me, the answer has always been the latter. So in meetings at the office, while everyone had their laptops on the table, I’d often have mine on my lap — a bit of an odd one out.
When you sit in a chair and let your arms hang naturally, your hands fall to your thighs. Or to the sides of your thighs. Right at your shoulder width — that’s where your hands want to be. No reaching forward, no lifting, no tension.
Personally, I’ve always wished the keyboard could be somewhere around or below the level of the desk surface.
What changes with Peaky 8-bit
Peaky 8-bit is an 8-key chord-input keyboard, split into two halves — one for each hand.
You can use it on a desk, but it’s small enough to hold and type with. You can type without looking at the keys.
This means:
- In a reclined chair, hands off the desk surface — you can type.
- Lying in bed, holding one unit in each hand — you can type.
- Standing, walking — you can type.
You don’t have to fight gravity. No tension in the joints. The “handcuffs” come off, and so does the desk they were chained to.
If someone saw you typing from inside your pocket, they’d probably do a double take.
Fair warning: this is an extreme sport
The name “Peaky” comes from Kaneda’s line in AKIRA: 「ピーキー過ぎてお前にゃ無理だよ」 — “It’s too peaky for you to handle.” I chose that name on purpose.
Chord input is not intuitive. It’s very different from QWERTY. Memorizing the chords isn’t that hard, but building the muscle memory so your fingers move without thinking — that takes time. If you play piano or a string instrument, you might pick it up faster.
Can it match the raw speed of someone fluent in QWERTY? Maybe not — at least not easily. But this was never about speed. It’s about typing without pain, in any position, looking cool as hell while doing it.
So what is Peaky 8-bit?
It’s not a replacement for your keyboard. It’s a choice. A way to type that’s easier on your body, in exchange for a learning curve.
If you’ve been dealing with back pain, if you’ve felt that something about the standard desk-and-keyboard setup is fundamentally wrong for your body, if you’ve wished you could just type without being locked into one position —
This is what I’ve been building. Just so you know it exists.

Lap top。
Peaky 8-bit
Extreme Sports
Peaky 8-bit
