Released the cheat sheet

This one is for v0.4.0.

For now, this is how I’ve laid it out.

It’s the same one I use myself.

I made it at PC wallpaper dimensions.

I’ve also stored an alpha-transparent PNG version in the same folder, so you should be able to layer it over your favorite wallpaper if you’d rather do that.

As for the issues still outstanding with the keymap:

• No long-press support
• IME switching (0001 1111) doesn’t behave properly depending on the application
• Modifier Arm chords don’t work — e.g. “Shift + Enter” for inserting a line break in chat-style input like Discord

…and so on.

I’ll be working through these as I go.

Plan change: going with a joystick instead of a trackball for the thumb position

Last week I wrote that I’d “picked up a 19mm trackball to try out while I was ordering parts anyway.”

Since then, I talked through with an AI how I’d actually go about implementing it on the P8, and we landed on the conclusion that an analog joystick is probably a better fit for the P8 than a trackball. Think something like the sticks on the Meta Quest controllers, I suppose…

The picture I have in mind is putting this on the central half of the P8 (currently the left side by default), and sticking a rotary encoder on the peripheral half (the right).

My Tindie listing plans have shifted a bit.

NOTE

In one line: listing the assembled v2.1 is on hold; I’ll be listing an assembled v2.0 instead.

Last week I said, “this is what I’m listing on Tindie next!” — but, well, it’s looking like I might not be able to list it after all…

I checked the power path with a multimeter, and the boost converter module I’d already soldered on doesn’t seem to be boosting at all.

I tried using desoldering wick to pull the solder out and swap just the boost module, but I’d apparently soldered it down really thoroughly, and I couldn’t get it off cleanly…

After a few hours of that I hit “yeah, this one’s done for,” so I reluctantly broke out a fresh PCB and parts and built a new one from scratch.

But now the newly rebuilt one won’t pair properly between the left and right halves…

The soldering and the continuity on the parts all seem fine, so — maybe it’s the firmware? I updated the config files and regenerated the firmware two or three times.

But no matter what, the newly built device doesn’t get recognized…

Well, it gets recognized for a split second, but then it’s more like “the connection drops immediately.”

From what I’ve dug up while asking the AI various things, this time the problem seems to be on the Xiao BLE side, either:

• the thing called the “oscillator” being defective, or
• a manufacturing defect around the BLE antenna on this particular XIAO unit (a solder bridge, a flaw in the antenna trace, etc.)

…something along those lines.

Ugh… if that’s the case, there’s not much I can do about it myself.

If this device turns out to be a dud too, that means I’ll have written off two Xiao BLEs.

A single Xiao BLE runs about ¥1,900, you know…(approx. $13 currently)

And the boost module is ¥300 each…

Not exactly the kind of price tag where you can casually go “right, on to the next one!!”

On top of that, I’ve run out of spare boards of the latest revision…

And I’m planning to order the next version (the hotswap-compatible one) in August…

So if anyone was thinking about buying on Tindie — my apologies.

Oh, but that reminds me: for the one currently listed, I have one spare “assembled” unit that I hadn’t gotten around to listing yet, so I’m going to put that one up. Also, if this “DIY Kit” version looks like it isn’t going to sell, I’m thinking I might assemble that one myself too and re-list it as a finished unit.

v0.4.0のものになります。

今のところ、こんな感じで編成しています。

私自身も利用しているものです。

PCの壁紙のサイズとして作っています。

あと、同フォルダにアルファ透過版のpngも格納してあるので、お気に入りの壁紙にレイヤーで重ねてご利用いただくことも可能かと思います。

キーマップの、まだ残っている課題としては、

• 長押しできない
• IME切り替え（0001 1111）が利用するアプリケーションによって素直に機能しない
• Modifier Armの同時押し（Discordなど、チャット形式の入力時に改行するときの「Shiftを押しながらEnter」ができない

などなど。

これらも追って対応していきます。

先週、「パーツ購入ついでに、試しに19mmのトラックボールを入手してみた」と書いた件。

その後、実際にP8に実装するにはどうしたらいいかなぁ？とAIと相談してみた感じだと、P8の場合はトラックボールよりもアナログジョイスティックの方が良さそう、という結論になりました。 イメージとしては、Meta Questのコントローラーのような感じというか。。

これをP8の親機側（現状、デフォだと左側）に実装して、もう片方の子機（右）にはロータリーエンコーダーをくっつける、、、という出来上がりイメージで考えています。

Tindieへの出品予定が少し変わります。

先週、「次はこれをTindieに出品予定です！」と言ったものですが、、ちょっと、もしかしたら出品できないかも、、という状況になっています。。

テスターを利用して通電を確認したところ、はんだ付け済みの昇圧モジュールがどうにも昇圧できていない様子。。

吸い取り線を利用してはんだを吸い取って、昇圧モジュールだけ交換しようと試みてみたのですががっつりはんだ付けしてしまっていたようでうまく取り外せず。。

数時間作業して、「ダメだこれは。。」となり、しょうがないので新たに基盤やパーツをおろして新しいものを作り直してみました。

しかし、今度はこの新しく作り直したものでもうまく左右のデバイスのペアリングができない。。

はんだ付けやパーツの通電具合などは問題ないっぽいのですが、、、ならファームウェアが問題なのだろうか？と2,3回configファイルを更新してファームウェアを再生成してみました。

しかしどうにも、新たに作った方のデバイスが認識されない。。

いや、一瞬認識されるのですが、「すぐに接続が切れてしまう」みたいな感じ。

AIにいろいろ聞きながら調べてみた感じだと、今度はどうもXiao BLEの部分で、

• 「オシレーター」なるものが不良状態か、
• XIAO個体のBLEアンテナ周りの製造不良（はんだブリッジ、アンテナパターンの欠陥など）の可能性

という状況の様子。。

うぁー、、そうなるとちょっと私ではどうにも手がでない。。

もしこのデバイスもダメということになると、２つXiao BLEを没にしてしまったということになる。

Xiao BLE、1個で約1900円もするのですよね。。

昇圧モジュールも1個300円する。。

そんなに気軽に「ほな次！！！」と言えるお値段ではない。。

また、最新版の基盤の予備も尽きてしまいました。。

８月には次のバージョン（ホットスワップ対応版）を発注する予定でして…。

Tindieでの購入を検討されていた方がいらしたら、申し訳ない。。

ああ、でもそういえば、現在出品中のこちらの「組み立て済み」のものは一個予備があってまだ出品できていなかったので、そちらを出品しようと思います。 また、この「DIY Kit」版がもし売れなさそうであれば、これも私で組み立てて、完成版にして出品しなおそうかと思います。
